Is it possible to hydrate the body in the same way drinking water does, simply by staying in a humid/steamy environment? Or am I just being a cretin?

No, the human body doesn't absorb water through the skin.

Don't big yourself up. I jest.

Because people who get water in their lungs always end up fine.

This is trolling, isn't it?

People can inhale steam without drowning. And no, this isn't trolling. I'm aware this probably has a very simple answer.

No is the very simple answer. You can inhale steam, yes, but your lungs are designed to sponge oxygen out of air, not water vapour.

Quite the opposite in fact, you lose quite a lot of water through breathing out, even in a humid environment.

Actually, I think that the science of the situation adds up to the effect that the only situation where you wouldn't lose any moisture through breathing would be when your environment is at or above body temperature, you would go into heat stroke quite quickly.

Fun fact for the day; if you are stranded on a dessert island and the only things you can drink are coconut milk and your own piss, take the fluid as an enema. Your colon can absorb the water but will block all the nasty chemicals in coconut milk and piss.

Surely there'll be coffee, ice cream, and plenty of other hydrating food?

Oh fuck me with a rusty chainsaw how did I manage that?

I really shouldn't start posting straight after work without at least having a cup of tea or a pile of bombay mix first.

You should know coffee's a diuretic.

It still hydrates you. Tea's a diuretic but I can go for weeks drinking nothing but. And I do! Quite often.

All the salt in that Bombay mix will dry you out, make sure you have a few deep breaths above the kettle to compensate.

Well you could have some orange juice instead, but remember that it doesn't count towards your five-a-day now.
