Two astrophysicists argue that questions about the future of life on Earth and beyond may soon be resolvable scientifically, thanks to new data about the Earth and about other planets in our galaxy, and by combining the earth-based science of sustainability with the space-oriented field of astrobiology.

In short, these two are trying to create a more accurate evolutionary model for species that can efficiently harvest energy. Seems highly speculative, but then I'm not an astrobiologist. Makes for interesting reading, nonetheless.

Like a more complicated version of the Kardashev scale? These things are really quite tenuous as they can't account for unpredictable technological developments.
