19568 The Boys Vol 2
More of "If America has all the watchmen, the British watch the watchmen" with sex, gore, rape and other violence. I personally recommend the previous thread, continue if you enjoy it.
The books are probably sold in completely different "volumes" I don't know about any of that this is just the second thread because 71 issues is more easily handled split in two. The Boys specials (BBCm, Herogasm and Highland Laddie) will have their own thread.

I'd never read The Boys to completion before due to problems locating various missing files. Now that's resolved I've read through the entire thing, including #68 which isn't here because of technical issues (I can post it on its own if you like but you'll probably save time by ignoring its absence). Admittedly this comic has an awful lot of sex, gore and violence but now I've read the whole thing in one sitting I honestly believe it outdoes The Watchmen in every field but the originality of the base concept. Similarly "high concept" plot but far, far more complex and involved, with depths of character that I've never been aware of in any comparative work of Alan Moore's. Completely unpretentious, too. Everything is a deathly bleak joke. Ennis is currently above both Morrison and Moore in my esteem.

The Boys reading list order:
#1-30 >>18737
#1-6 "Herogasm" >>20404
#31-47 >>19448
#1-6 "Highland Laddie" >>20689
#48-59 >>19857
#1-6 "Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker" >>20540
#60-72 >>20140

Oh is this the one where they based the character's look off of Simon Pegg.

Slowly getting through them and enjoying them a lot so far. I'm a fan of Ennis but I don't think it's necessary to "rate" one writer above another really. They all do slightly different things with the medium.

Thanks for all the good stuff though!

I usually just rate the one I've read most recently the highest, unless it was particularly bad.

I liked it, but - is it just me or is this not about supes at all, more transparent social commentary?

The superpowers are an easy answer to "why don't outsiders get involved?" (they'd wind up dead duh), but overall, the supes are implausibly badly trained super soldiers who primarily are, in a social context, spoiled superrich kids who can get away with anything. Take away the superpowers and the comic would work much like it did before.

I hadn't really put much thought into analysing it but that seems like quite a strong theory for the most part. Maybe not just about super rich kids but people with power in general.

How many fucking pages are missing from this? It's not just me, right? The most glaring inconsistency is when the other characters reference the death of Mother's Milk, and that was never depicted (he's last seen on this page >>20322). The Wikipedia entries for the series describe whole other scenes I don't remember reading. What's going on here?

It's not impossible that I fucked it up. I can sort it out if you can pinpoint what's wrong, assuming its not what 20906 suggests.

When you say pinpoint, I'm not entirely sure I can. Like I said there are whole scenes missing and it would be a big job to find out every single one. These aren't scenes from the miniseries as >>20906 implies - I haven't read them yet but I know for damn sure MM doesn't get killed in them.

Look here on Wikipedia for instance:

>during a political rally, he embarrassed Rayner using audio taken from one of her many sexual encounters with Butcher, as well as chartering a small plane with the banner "Rayner is a whore" conducting a fly by.

Logically that would be between this page >>20854 and this page >>20855. In fact the filenames are 13 and 16, so there must be two pages of this missing.

Yeah I noticed it too when I read this a while back. I was just too lazy to bother saying anything. I think I noticed a couple other bits which seemed to jar and felt like there were parts/pages missing. Fuck knows where.

MM being merked is definitely missing though.

Also just to say cheers comlad I did really enjoy this in spite of the odd missing page. Thought it was really well done, love the callousness of some of the main characters. I did find the fact that Hughie(?) was Simon Pegg a bit weird, that might just be because I don't particularly like Pegg though.
