Road rap is brilliant, even when it's a bit shit. There's just something very pleasing about a post-Ali G scene in which people are proud to rep their ends, no matter how unglamourous those ends might be.

Also, if anyone in this thread likes garage, make yourself comfortable because you're in for a treat:

That's what's remarkable about the DJ EZ set - he gets this crowd absolutely hyped. At one point I spotted a bloke in a top hat giving it the full gun finger treatment. It's a masterclass in garage DJing, the crowd are baying for rewinds. I've never envied a DJ so much, he just completely kills it. EZ makes it look effortless in a way that only decades of experience can prepare you for.

Related to the vaguely naff rap, I saw a particular video a while ago that has been on the fringe of my memory driving me crazy and I would very much like to find it. It's by this heavily depressed asian fellow who seems to be working two jobs and the chorus goes:
fuck this life
the life that I'm living yeah
I hate this life
...
this is no life

And such. He made a music video and everything.

Why do London chavs pronounce the letter I in such a weird way?

Nobody is exactly sure. The dialect spoken by "London chavs" is known to linguists as Multicultural London English and is regarded as something of a treasure in many quarters. It is an immensely complex dialect, due to the very broad range of linguistic influences.

The technical answer to your question is that the vowel presentation in MLE is undergoing a reverse diphthong shift, reverting from the altered vowels of Cockney back to their RP pronunciations. With a word like "life", a Cockney speaker would use a back vowel sound for the letter i (like the o in not) while an RP speaker would use a front vowel sound (like the a in bat). MLE speakers can be anywhere between the two, depending mainly on their age and centrality. The open central vowel that many MLE speakers would use in the word "life" is almost totally unknown in British dialects and is much more commonly used by Australian and South African speakers, which is why it sounds odd.

Nobody is exactly sure why this reverse diphthong shift is happening, partly because it is occurring so quickly and partly because there are so many possible sources. One theory suggests that it is a product of extremely linguistically diverse schools, where Cockney is less commonly used and where remedial English teaching for non-native speakers is being delivered in RP.

Here's an excellent short talk on MLE:

I found this talk really difficult to listen to -- I know it's not his fault, but if he does have those speech impediments then perhaps he could get someone to do the talk for him?

To stay "on topic", one really annoying thing about th accent from my hometown in Yorkshire is that the long o (road, boat, goat, bingo, etc) becomes an "er" (flirt, skirt, third, nerd, herd), so y'c'n g'dahn rehrd on ya behrt.

Large numbers of non-native English speakers all attending the same school along with very few native speakers giving rise to a sort of "wrong learning through brownian motion/osmosis" is the primary cause of MLE.

Indeed. In the past accents were developed due to lack of human movement, now they're caused by excessive human movement.

... he says in English, using a variety of Old English, Old French, Germanic, Proto-Germanic, Latin and Dutch derived words that were accumulated into the language due to people moving around.
Arguing that those are languages and not accents is a pretty weak distinction.

Only one of those is due to population migration, that being Englishes Germanic roots. The rest are all artificial or have some other caveat.

I don't see why those distinctions are relevant, they're still due to people moving around. The development of language and accent results from a huge number of factors, the statement in >>7755 is an oversimplification or generalisation with no real validity.

Back on topic: If you like UK rap, you owe it to yourself to listen to Big Narstie's new EP. It's a fantastic body of work, but if you only have time to hear one track, skip to 12:30 for "Close My Eyes". Narstie has this reputation as a one-man party, but he's dropped this completely raw exposition of emotional pain and vulnerability.
