Any cyclist who dares not tackle Hyde Park Corner by road is a coward.

Bicycles are for riding, not walking around with.

Any cyclist who rides in London is asking for an early meeting with the grim reaper. If you want to ride bikes move to the netherlands.

My dad's been commuting by bike in London for over 35 years. As far as I know he's been to A&£ at least 4 times due to road accidents, including vans knocking him over, cars braking suddenly in front of him and so on. He's toning it down a bit now but it's always struck me as a seriously perilous means of getting around.

Having cycled in both London and my hometown in t'north, I've had better experience in London. People here would happily mow me down without a second thought.... for obeying traffic law. As a cyclist, I have to stop at red lights just as the drivers do. In London this didn't seem to be much of a problem.

Sometimes plod will try to lock you up merely for riding a bicylce. It's best to stay well clear if you ask me.

The basic problem is that riding a bicycle requires a very different set of skills to driving a car, but most cyclists have no training at all. I see lots of fit and experienced riders making really basic errors; Your average bloke going down the bookies on an old mountain bike might as well sign his own death warrant. It doesn't help that most of our cycling infrastructure is designed by non-cyclists, so a lot of cycle lanes funnel you into terribly dangerous situations.

If there was no driving test, of course driving a car would be catastrophically dangerous (c.f. Indian roads). With the boom in cycling, we're seeing increasing numbers of totally inexperienced cyclists on the roads, with the attitude that merely knowing how to stay upright is enough. We need an urgent programme of cycling tuition, both for children and for adult riders.

It used to be that young road riders would transition from cycling proficiency classes in school to a road club, where they would learn the ropes from experienced riders. That club culture has badly broken down in recent years, with MAMILs taking up cycling but not serving their apprenticeship in a club. Anyone who has ever been on a sportive will know that the competency of most of these riders is completely out of proportion with the shininess of their bikes.

I'm not for one moment advocating for licensing of cyclists, but I think we need a cultural change in which going for cycle training is a normal and expected part of taking up cycling.

I agree. It's sad to see so many cyclists who just don't have a clue. There seems to be a lot of "almost" savvy riders too, who know that, for example, taking the whole lane is a valid and legal piece of defensive cycling, but that doing it at 12mph on a main commuter road at 8am isn't quite alright.

This is correct in Nottingham as well.

Anyone that commutes to QMC or the uni knows that Derby Road is a death trap with cunt taxis and house-sized buses determined to make your ride as stressful as possible.

>We need an urgent programme of cycling tuition, both for children and for adult riders.

Can't agree more. I was thinking about this the other day, and if say, there was a £20 once off fee for proper lessons, etiquette and bicycle registration - I'd happily pay for that.

I saw this Lance Armstrong (my own pejorative for wannabes), bombing down a road this morning at 6am and straight through a red light. Granted the roads were relatively empty, but as I was crossing, I had to stop to let him pass, even though he was completely breaking the law.

Also bicycle lanes, there is fuck-all space to put them. When you have idiots parking on semi-major side streets, on both sides, you have a odd single middle lane - that is in no way suitable fora bicycle and a van. Lunacy.

You're dead right about having them designed by non-cyclist sadists. I really hate the way that casual cycling is still seen as a novelty in England.

Cyclistdadlad reporting, my dad actually used to teach cycling proficiency at a local club, which treated on how to cycle on the road and basic bike maintenance. I think this has stopped happening for quite a long time, it's a pity that ARE BOJO likes to bump his gums about how wonderful bikes are but there's fuck all forthcoming regarding this sort of thing.

When I was in primary school we had a bicycle proficiency test thing, sadly I have forgotten the majority of it as I barely ever cycled on roads until I was an adult.

The militant crowd like to go around crying STOP KILLING CYCLISTS, without stopping to acknowledge that there's a lot they can do to stop themselves getting killed

There's also a lot to be said for driver education too. From the reports I've heard about the NDORS syllabus people find it worthwhile for more than just dodging points, and there are whispers of making similar courses available generally outside the scheme.

It's the same argument if you think about it. If not worse, strange how some people seem to think that telling a grieving family that their father was killed due to his own negligence is somehow more acceptable than telling a rape victim to be a bit less flirty next time.

You think that someone who merely points out that you've butchered an American idiom has "taken your post to heart"? I can't shake the feeling that >>15399 was actually intended for me, but I don't care for his opinion and wasn't going to even mention it, much less throw a tantrum. In case you were wondering (and I know you weren't), left field is the position that has to throw the ball furthest to the key first base.

Cycling in London appears to be a slow form of suicide. That said, I don't live there. So I have no idea of the ground rules. I can only assume that it is similar to the difference between driving anywhere else in this country and driviing in London

Nearly hit a cyclist on a roundabout the other day because he decided that he didn't need to stop and give way to me. The cunt even had the gall to chastise me for it, too.

I don't mind sharing the road with cyclists, at long as they obey the law.

Saw a chap riding on the right side of the lane, and then cut across it to turn left causing the car behind him to break violently. The prick didn't even look behind him when feebly signalling at a moments notice. I have less and less sympathy for cyclists these days.
